This year’s Christmas Concert at the Shrine of Fatima will be different from that of previous years. The show will be performed by “Radio Voices”, a vocal quintet formed in 1991 in the City of Porto, one of the most original Portuguese musical projects. Sound lied to humor and good disposition is their main characteristic and what makes this quintet one of the more original musical projects in Portugal. Admission is free.
On December 9, Maria João Ataíde, from the Higher Education School of Infancy Educators ‘Maria Ulrich’, gives, at Fatima, the second talk of the reflection cycle proposed for the pastoral year 2012-2013. Titled “Learning how to trust while discovering God: towards a spirituality of infancy”, the talk will be given at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima at 16h00. After the talk, there will be a recital of theorbo, lute and guitar, by Tiago Matias.
Cardinal Onaiyekan visited Fatima at the end of November. Recently nominated Cardinal , on November 24, 2012, Cardinal Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria, was on pilgrimage to Cova da Iria, between November 26 and 28, accompanied by a group of 121 Nigerian pilgrims
Fatima holds, on December 1, the IX National Youth Festival of Message Song, an initiative promoted and organized by the National Department of Youth Ministry (DNPJ), which will take place at the Auditorium of Paul VI Pastoral Center. The Festival’s theme is: “Rejoice always in the Lord!” (Phil 4, 4) & “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28, 19). According to information received from the organizers, there are represented in the Festival 13 Portuguese dioceses, which will be present with a video clip and an original piece of music.
The Shrine of Fatima invites all interested persons to attend the session of presentation of the III Pastoral Year of Celebration of the Centennial of the Apparitions. The program will be as follows:
On the afternoon of November 24, the Shrine of Fatima inaugurated, at the Convívio de Santo Agostinho (St. Augustine’s Foyer), in the Complex of the Basilica of Most Holy Trinity, an exhibition recalling the second apparition of Our Lady at Cova da Iria on June 13, 1917. The exhibition, titled “To be, the secret of the Heart, is open to the public, free of charge, Monday through Sunday, from 09h00 to 19h00, until October 31, 2013.
The Shrine of Fatima celebrated on November 13, for the first time, the Solemnity of the Dedication of the Basilica of Most Holy Trinity. In the main Mass of the day, celebrated at 11h00, in the Basilica of Most Holy Trinity, the Rector of the Shrine of Fatima highlighted the fact that the granting of the title of basilica stresses the “bond of special communion with the Church of Rome and the Pope” and the “love the Pope has for Fatima”, something – he said – that characterizes “the attitude of several Roman Pontiffs (towards Fatima) since the time of the apparitions”.
The Family of St. John of God – Brothers and workers of the Hospitaler Order – starts next Monday, October 22, their LXVIII General Chapter being held in the Retreat House of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, at the Shrine of Fatima. Eighty Brothers from 20 Provinces, a Vice-Province and two General Delegations, together with 20 lay workers, are going to meet to celebrate the LXVIII General Chapter of the Order.
October 12/13 International Anniversary Pilgrimage will be presided over by José da Cruz Cardinal Policarpo, Patriarch of Lisbon and President of the Bishops Conference of Portugal and the theme will be “You have received gratuitously, give gratuitously!” Up to October 2, 128 groups of pilgrims, from twenty-nine countries, have reported to the Shrine’s Pilgrim Service Department the intention of taking part in the main Mass of the Pilgrimage, on the morning of October 13.
The Most Reverend Pio Alves, Auxiliary Bishop of Porto, presides, this year, over September’s International Pilgrimage, which celebrates the anniversary of the fifth apparition of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima on September 13, 1917. The pilgrimage’s motto is: “Builders of a solidarian society”. In declarations to the Shrine of Fatima, Bishop Pio Alves emphasizes the joy he felt upon receiving invitation to preside over pilgrimage. Bishop Alves was ordained bishop on April 10, 2011, at the Shrine of Sameiro, Braga, Portugal.
Archbishop Jorge Ortiga, of Braga, President of the Bishops Committee for Social Pastoral Ministry and Human Mobility, will preside over the International Pilgrimage of August 12/13, scheduled to officially begin at 18h30, in the Little Chapel of Apparitions. This year, the Pilgrimage’s theme will be “Blessed is the man who fears the Lord”.
On August 26, the official 15h00 Mass will be celebrated in thanksgiving for the granting by the Holy See of the Title of Basilica to Most Holy Trinity Church. The Mass will, of course, be celebrated at the Basilica of Most Holy Trinity Church and presided over by the Most Rev. António Marto, Bishop of Leiria-Fatima.

On August 15, day in which the Church celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Shrine of Fatima will follow the usual Sunday schedule. The International 11h00 Mass at the Outdoor Altar of the Prayer Area will be presided over by Bishop António dos Santos Marto, of Leiria-Fatima. Still on the same day, at the same celebration, the Shrine of Fatima will give thanks to God for the Jubilee of the priestly ordination of Canon Luciano Cristino, one of its oldest chaplains.
The Museum of the Shrine of Fatima celebrates, in August 2012, two very important dates for the spread of the Message of Fatimaand for reflection on the material testimonies that,inherited from the past and related to the manifestation of faith by pilgrims,keep on extending their usefulness through the speech of museology. The twopermanent exhibitions of the Museum were inaugurated in the month of August andhave, throughout these years, revealed themselves to be special spaces –each one in its own way – for the contemplation of the Message of Fatima.
The Shrine of Fatima addresses to grandparents and grandkids an invitation to celebrate, on July 26, the day when the Liturgy of the Church remembers St. Joachim and St. Anne, parents of Our Lady and grandparents of Jesus.
There will be performed, on July 15, at the Shrine of Fatima, a concert by the Schola Cantorum Pastorinhos de Fátima and by the children’s choir of the Choral Academy of Dortmund/Germany. The concert starts at 16h00, at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima. Admission free.
With the cooperation of several religious institutions used to work with youths, the project of youth pastoral ministry promoted by the Shrine of Fatima titled Youth House intends to be a space for listening and dialogue, for prayer and reflection, entirely directed to youths.
Bishop Nuno Brás, Auxiliary Bishop of the Patriarchate of Lisbon, is to preside to July’s Anniversary Pilgrimage. Following the custom of the Shrine of Fatima, which every month recalls the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, July’s pilgrimage will recall, in a special way, the third apparition on July 13, 1917.
Next Sunday June 17, at 15h30, Banda Sinfónica da Guarda Nacional Republicana (G.N.R.) will perform a concert at the Shrine of Fatima. Admission is free and the show will be held at Paul VI Pastoral Center. The band will be directed by major-sergeant Armindo Luís and accompanied by the quintet of trumpets “Almost 6”.
